Saints celebrated on the 26th of June
SAINT ANTHELMUS, BISHOP OF BELLEY
Saint Anthelmus was a native of Savoy who, after being Provost of a Cathedral Chapter, entered the Carthusian Order and became Prior of the Grande Chartreuse.
During the Schism of 1159 he defended the rights of Pope Alexander II against the Anti-Pope Octavian, and thereby incurred the enmity of the German Emperor, Frederick Barbarossa. The Pope consecrated him Bishop of Belley, and sent him to England as his legate at the time of the dispute between King Henry II and Saint Thomas à Becket. There he rendered important services to the Church and to the country. Saint Anthelmus died during the famine which devastated a large part of France in the year 1178.
