BLESSED ALFRED PARTE, PRIEST AND MARTYR
Blessed Alfred (Alfredo Parte Saiz SchP) was born on June 2, 1899. The eldest of ten brothers, son of Castor and Justa, he first saw the light of day in Cilleruelo de Bricia, in the Archdiocese of Burgos.
A pious child, he later took Piarist habit (August 1, 1915). In 1918 he suffered a prolonged illness which left him with limitations in one of his legs for the rest of his life. He was much admired for his patience in the face of illness and incapacity.
Following his priestly ordination in 1928, Fr Alfred then became a teacher (he was known for being popular with his students) and the treasurer of the religious school in Villacarriedo, from which in August 1936 the red militiamen expelled him along with the other staff.
On November 15, 1936, Alfred was arrested at his aunt's house in Santander and proclaimed at once that he was a Priest and a Piarist. After being taken from jail to jail he was eventually locked up on a prison "ghost ship". With other incarcerated priests, he heard confessions, gave counsel, prayed, and often donated his own food to others. Finally, Fr Alfred was executed by being fatally shot in the nape of his neck on December 27, 1936.
