SAINT MOLAISE, ABBOT

to this ancient saint.

Saint Molaise (Laisren mac Nad Froich, Mo Laisse, Laserian) established a monastery on an island in Lower Lough Erne in County Fermanagh. In the 6th century it became part of a pilgrim route to Croagh Patrick in County Mayo. Saint Molaise's Abbey, Devenish, developed into a centre of scholarship. The monastic settlement was raided by Vikings in 837 A.D. and burned in 1157, it later flourished as the site of St Mary’s Augustinian Priory.

Originally erected from wood, the earliest stone buildings (Saint Molaise's House, a small oratory, along with a magnificent round tower) appeared during the years following the fire.

The Irish annals record Saint Molaise's death in 564. He is commemorated on September 12. [According to some sources, he is one of the 12 Apostles of Ireland.]

¹The Gospel Book of Molaise - Soiscel Molaisse - is a small early 11th century cumdach (a metal reliquary case for early medieval Irish manuscripts or relics) constructed to hold the Gospels of Molaise. It was commissioned by the same Laisren mac Nad Froich, who is also the patron saint of Devenish Island.

He was master of arts in one of our universities; but going abroad to Douay, in Flanders, was received into the English college there, 1576, and made priest in 1577; and the year following sent upon the mission. Where he had not been long before he again went abroad, and travelled to Rome, partly for devotion, and partly for further improvement in learning. BLESSED RICHARD NEWPORT, PRIEST AND MARTYR Richard Newport, alias Smith , was born in Northamptonshire and performed his studies abroad, partly in the college of Rheims (if he be the Richard Smith whom I find in the Douay diary sent to Rome in 1586) and partly in that of Rome, where he was made priest. From thence he was sent upon the English mission, and behaved himself in such a manner as justly to acquire the character of a laborious missionary; being withal remarkably successful in bringing home many strayed sheep to the fold of Christ, to which his apostolical way of living did not a little contribute. He was several times apprehended and cast into prison, and twice banished.
