WILLIAM, ABBOT OF CLAIRVAUX, MARTYR - 8 APRIL

  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN APRIL Saints celebrated on the 8th of April WILLIAM, ABBOT OF CLAIRVAUX, MARTYR A page of one of Fortunatus Hueber's Saints' books, "Stammenbuch..." (1693) Pope Gregory IX  summoned William (Guilielmus), who first was abbot of Villers (Belgium), and later of Clairvaux, together with a number of other abbots and bishops to Rome to participate in the Lateran Council. William was part of a group of abbots that were imprisoned by Emperor Frederick II; he died as a result of the maltreatment suffered during this harsh and unjust incarceration. His body was brought back to Clairvaux. In the Menol. Cist .* he is called "Blessed William" (I.740) .
