WILLIAM, ABBOT OF CLAIRVAUX, MARTYR
Pope Gregory IX summoned William (Guilielmus), who first was abbot of Villers (Belgium), and later of Clairvaux, together with a number of other abbots and bishops to Rome to participate in the Lateran Council. William was part of a group of abbots that were imprisoned by Emperor Frederick II; he died as a result of the maltreatment suffered during this harsh and unjust incarceration. His body was brought back to Clairvaux. In the Menol. Cist.* he is called "Blessed William" (I.740).
