SAINT GUIRAUD, BISHOP OF BEZIERS
Saint Guiraud (Guiraudus, Viraldus), Bishop of Beziers (Biterrae), was born in the vicinity of that town, but his background is shrouded in obscurity.
He received his education at the monastery of St Mary of Cassian, and took the habit of the regular canons at the same place.
After being prior for some time, he was elected bishop because of his holiness and humility. He sought to escape this promotion by fleeing, but was overtaken and consecrated by force. For a long time he dutifully tended his flock and died in 1123.
His body was buried in the church of St Aphrodisius, one of his predecessors. Many miracles happened at his grave. He is mentioned in the Elenchus* on November 5, once as Gerardus, and in another entry as St Giraudus. (El., Mg.)
