EDELWIDA, QUEEN
Edelwida (Ethelwita, Aswitha, [Ealhswith, Ælswith]), wife of King Alfred of the Anglo-Saxons, died in A.D. 904 after having built the Winton Convent [Nunnaminster in Winchester] in England. It is not entirely clear whether she eventually entered it herself. No hagiographer gives her the title sancta, but Edelwida is referred to as religiosissima.
