SAINT ZECHARIAH, PATRIARCH OF JERUSALEM
Saint Zechariah (Zachary, Zacharias) first became custodian of the holy vessels at Constantinople in 609, and when the patriarch Isacius of Jerusalem died, his successor.
In the year 614 he was taken as a prisoner to their native country by the Persians, who had devastated Jerusalem and the holy places with murder and fire, together with many treasures, among which was the Holy Cross.
Only in the year 629, following the successful campaign by emperor Heraclius, was Saint Zacharias released and reinstated in his patriarchate, which he headed with dignity for another two years.
