BLESSED THOMAS ABELL, PRIEST AND MARTYR
In 1540, during the reign of Henry VIII, the secular priest Thomas Abell [Thomas Abel] suffered death by hanging in Smithfield. He was court chaplain to Queen Catherine and refused to the king both consent to his divorce and recognition of his ecclesiastical supremacy, which led to him being charged and convicted of this perceived crime against the king's majesty. (Cal. Mg.)
He was beatified by Pope Leo XIII.
