ETHELRED, KING OF MERCIA

A page of one of Fortunatus Hueber's
Saints' books,
"Stammenbuch..." (1693)

Ethelred (Æthelred, Ælred) (Ethelredus), king of the Mercians, resigned his reign after 29 years. He went on to prepare for a happy eternity by becoming a monk and died as such after 13 years (in  A.D. 716). He never seems to have enjoyed public veneration. On June 18, however, Bucelin* mentions a "venerable Ethelred". He calls him the seventh king of Mercia who joined a monastery and died in 704. (May I. 436. /June III. 551., Buc.)
