SAINT LEONTIUS AND COMPANIONS, MARTYRS
(Saint Leontius and 35 Companions, Martyrs) According to the
Martyrology of Saint Jerome*, Saints Leontius, Mauricius, Mellitus, Achilles, Daniel, Corionus, Attonus, Besonus, Eustasius, Octavius, Anicetus, Theodore, Cristus, Candidus, Gorgonius, Arcelaus, Cyrinus, Euphrodosius, Gelanus (Gilanus), Auticius, Azelus, Attenus, Gagius, Sision , Auxentius, Valentine, Droditius, Faustasius, Aurelius, Gorgodianus, Cyrion, Corolus, Nostinus, Sisinnius, Castricius and Apollonius were martyrs at Alexandria.
Various sources, however, vary greatly with regard to the names. In the
Roman Martyrology*, these names do not feature at all on July 10, but Saints Leontius, Mauritius and Daniel and Companions are listed instead. They were martyred in various ways at Nicopolis in Armenia under the Emperor Licinius and the Praeses Lysias, and finally thrown into the fire, where they died a glorious death. The
Bollandists*, on July 10
(III. 35-47), mention 45 martyrs, not all of whom are listed by name, which is why the aforementioned Alexandrian martyrs are sometimes confused with other groups of blood witnesses.
