SAINTS SABINUS AND EUNOMIUS, BISHOPS
The bodies of these holy bishops were found in A.D. 1597 under the ruins of Lesina Cathedral. One of the marble coffins bore the inscription: S. Sabinus, Canusinus, Pontifex Lesinensis and contained the bones of the saint and his unharmed head, on the other was written: S. Eunomius; there were some bones in it. Other coffins found contained relics of the holy martyrs Alexander, Firmian, Primian and Tellurius and the holy virgin and martyr Ursula.
All the coffins were taken with their contents (only a small amount of relics were left in Lesina) to the Church of the Annunciata in Naples. The feast of the holy bishops Sabinus and Eunomius is celebrated there on February 9.
Whether this Saint Sabinus is identical with Saint Sabinus, bishop of Canosa, cannot be determined; at least, as the inscription says, he was born at Canosa. The probable time of his death is A. D. 566. (II. 330-339)
