GERARD, RELIGIOUS
Gerard (Gerardus, Gerardinus, Guardus), a Franciscan, is listed in Artur du Monstier, Martyrology of the Franciscans* with the title "blessed". However, this source does not provide any reliable details about him.
According to Hueber's Menologium of the Franciscans*, on the other hand, Gerard was a member of a delegation that sought to promote reunification of the Greek and the Latin Church. On this mission, in 1250, he happened to be in Constantinople, when he suddenly exclaimed: "Now, at this very hour, the eagle is captured." All those present were startled, and he added that King Louis IX of France had been taken prisoner by the Saracens - a report that was unfortunately confirmed.
