BERNARDINO OBRÉGON, FOUNDER
Bernardinus Obrégon [Bernardino Gómez de Obrégon], founder of the Brothers of the Infirm, who care for the sick in hospitals, was born in 1540 in Las Huelgas near Burgos. His aristocratic family ensured that he joined the military. Having once punished a soldier, the latter, to his surprise, expressed a profound gratitude for having been chastised by him. This experience led to Bernardino's conversion, which happened in 1568. Henceforth he turned his life around, devoted himself to caring for the sick, and founded the aforementioned Congregation. He died in the hospital in Madrid, the centre of his institute, on August 6, 1598, at the age of 58. [Efforts for Bernardino's beatification are ongoing.]
