SAINT URSUS, CONFESSOR

This holy priest is venerated in Aosta (Augusta Praetoria) in Northern Italy - where his relics rest in the cathedral - though some martyrologies erroneously style him "Bishop." No documentary evidence concerning him exists, yet his veneration dates back to time immemorial. Tradition in Aosta holds that he was a Scot by birth and, by vocation, a pious and zealous priest at the Church of St Peter, serving as a disciple of the holy Bishop Gratus. He distinguished himself before the world through great humility, mercy, gentleness, and a peace-loving nature. To avoid burdening anyone, he supported himself through manual labour, while at night he would visit the churches, whose doors opened to him of their own accord. On the hillside where he lived, he cultivated a vineyard that produced wine endowed with the power to heal the sick. When the city was once threatened by a flood, he blessed the waters, whereupon they immediately receded. His charity extended even to animals; forest birds would fly to meet him as though tamed by his hand. He exposed the lie of a nobleman’s servant who claimed to have lost a horse and secured his pardon, while simultaneously instructing him never to ride past a church without uncovering his head - or, if time permitted, entering to pray. We omit the story regarding Bishop Ploceanus, as it is inherently improbable and evidently fabricated, and the episcopal lists contain no bishop of that name. Saint Ursus is invoked to obtain favourable weather.

BLESSED LUKE KIRBY, PRIEST AND MARTYR 16th century houses, painted by Auguste Mayer He was born in the bishopric of Durham, according to Raissius ; others say at Richmond, in Yorkshire. He was master of arts in one of our universities; but going abroad to Douay, in Flanders, was received into the English college there, 1576, and made priest in 1577; and the year following sent upon the mission. BLESSED RICHARD NEWPORT, PRIEST AND MARTYR Richard Newport, alias Smith , was born in Northamptonshire and performed his studies abroad, partly in the college of Rheims (if he be the Richard Smith whom I find in the Douay diary sent to Rome in 1586) and partly in that of Rome, where he was made priest. From thence he was sent upon the English mission, and behaved himself in such a manner as justly to acquire the character of a laborious missionary; being withal remarkably successful in bringing home many strayed sheep to the fold of Christ, to which his apostolical way of living did not a little contribute.  He was several times apprehended and cast into prison, and twice banished.
