SAINT HYPATIUS, BISHOP OF ANCYRA
Saint Hypatius (March 31), was a bishop who on this day is listed in a Coptic calendar. The Bollandists* (III. 899) mention him, however, they are unable to provide more details about this holy prelate. It should also be noted that in the illustrations of the Greek-Russian calendar found in the introduction to Volume 1, Saint Hypatius is depicted as a bishop carrying an image of the Virgin Mary on March 31. The Bollandists* (May I. XXI) conclude from this that he distinguished himself in the Iconoclasm as a defender of the pure doctrine; but on the other hand this type of depiction could also simply express the saint's general veneration of the Blessed Virgin. The Greek Directory (Typikon) calls him Bishop of Ancyra. Thus, it seems that he had no connection with Saint Hypatius, Bishop of Gangra (November 14), who lived in the 4th century, although the Greek source mixes up these two saints.
