SAINT MAURONT, ABBOT
Saint Mauront (Maurontus) is commemorated on January 8, or January 9. Also known as Maurontius, Mavrontus, and Maurentius, he lived at the end of the seventh century at Saint Florent-le-Vieux (S. Florentii veteris) in Anjou (a place otherwise known as Glanna, Gloma, or Glowa). He was the first abbot of the monastery he founded there (cf. Gall. chr. XIV, 621 and 623). Having completely renounced the world and its pleasures for the sake of Jesus, he was a man of wondrous humility and innocence. Upon the abbot's death, the holy Saint Hermeland had a vision (Vol. II, p. 675), in which he beheld Mauront's pure soul being led into heaven by angels. The monastery was later destroyed by the Normans (see Saint Florentius). Abbot Abaldus re-established it in the year 799 according to the Rule of Saint Benedict. According to the generally accepted view, Saint Mauront died on January 8, 695, although Migne* cites the year 720.
