SAINT PIGMENIUS, PRIEST AND MARTYR
Saint Pigmenius, priest and martyr of Rome, taught many in the Christian faith and was thrown into the Tiber in the year 363. We know nothing more about the cause and perpetrators of his death. Some sources state that the prefect Apronianus, out of hatred for Christians, organized a kind of persecution and killed many of the believers. Other writers attribute the blame to temporary mob uprisings caused by the followers of the abandoned pagan temples. A pious matron named Candida retrieved the lifeless body of Pigmenius from the river and buried it in the churchyard of Pontianus. Part of his relics is said to have later come to Prague. His "Acts," in which he is also credited with the education of Emperor Julian, as well as an address he is said to have given to this emperor in Rome, are fabricated. In the Roman Martyrology*, he is listed on March 24 (III. 481).
