Prayer to the Angels and the Saints

Heavenly Father, in praising Your Angels and Saints we praise Your glory, for by honouring them we honour You, their Creator. Their splendour shows us Your greatness, which infinitely surpasses that of all creation.

In Your loving providence, You saw fit to send Your Angels to watch over us. Grant that we may always be under their protection and one day enjoy their company in heaven.

Heavenly Father, You are glorified in Your Saints, for their glory is the crowning of Your gifts. You provide an example for us by their lives on earth, You give us their friendship by our communion with them, You grant us strength and protection through their prayer for the Church, and You spur us on to victory over evil and the prize of eternal glory by this great company of witnesses.

Grant that we who aspire to take part in their joy may be filled with the Spirit that blessed their lives, so that, after sharing their faith on earth, we may also experience their peace in heaven. Amen.

BL. NICOLO RUSCA, PRIEST AND MARTYR 

Blessed Nicolo Rusca was born in Bedano, Switzerland, on April 20, 1563 to a family that belong to an ancient and noble house, the House of Rusconi. 

HE PREACHED THE CATHOLIC FAITH 

Bl. Nicolo was ordained to the priesthood in 1587 and at the end of his time of study, he was appointed as the Archpriest of Sondrio. This was an appointment he was kept in until his death. He also exerted himself to  to promote the teachings and decisions of the Council of Trent and also tried to cope with the rise of Protestantism in parts of Europe. 

HE WAS MARTYRED BY TORTURE

Bl. Nicolo was briefly arrested in 1608 and acquitted of breaching rules in relation to respect of religious tolerance. In 1618, he was taken by force by several soldiers under false pretences and was killed through the use of torture in 1618. He was recognised as a martyr by the Catholic Church and was beatified in on April 21, 2013.

The Proprium of Passau relates his life story as follows: Saint Valentine came from the seashore and arrived at Batava, today's Passau. Here he wanted to proclaim the gospel to the inhabitants, who were ignorant of the true worship of God, and therefore went to Rome to obtain the necessary authority from the Pope for this undertaking. Upon his return, he invested much time and effort to gain those lost souls for Christ, as the Pope expected him to.
