SAINT SIGEBERT, KING OF EAST ANGLIA, MARTYR Death of Saint Sigebert in the battle with the Mercians - Sidney Paget, c. 1898 Saint Sigebert, king and martyr, who died about 637, was the stepbrother of Earpwald, king of the East Angles. During the reign of Redwald he lived an exile in Gaul where he received baptism and became an ardent Christian. Earpwald died about 627, and East Anglia seems to have relapsed into anarchy and heathenism for some three years until Sigebert returned thither, about 631, and became king. He at once set about the conversion of his people, being greatly assisted by Saint Felix, who seems to have come over from Gaul with him, and for whom a see was established at Dunwich in Suffolk. Another prominent figure in Sigebert's revival was the Irish monk, Saint Fursey, or Fursa, for whom he built a monastery at Burghcastle in Suffolk. With the aid of Saint Felix, Sigebert also est...

This event contributed to his desire to commence missionary work among the Huron natives of New France (today’s Canada). While teaching, he had also met  Father John de Brebeuf , recently exiled from New France, and a while later Father Daniel indeed became a missionary to the New World. Father Daniel arrived in Acadia, Canada, in 1632, and was sent to Quebec a year later. There he first taught at school. His opportunity t...

On March 26 , 1639, he entered the  Society of Jesus   in Paris, as a lay assistant (donné) rather than as a  Jesuit , because of his progressing deafness - a note preserved in the archives of the  Jesuits   of Chantilly, near Paris, informs us that he had to discontinue his noviciate for this reason: " Renatus Goupil a tirocinio Parisiensi exclusus erat, quia surdaster ."
