  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MAY Saints celebrated on the 21st of May WELCOME! SAINT RAYMOND, BISHOP OF BALBASTRO Raymond (Raymundus), bishop of Balbastro (Barbastrum) in the Spanish Kingdom of Aragon, was born around the middle of the 11th century at Orbans (Urbanum) in the Diocese of Toulouse.  A soldier at first, he soon left the world and entered the monastery of St Antonin in Pamiers as a canon. From there he came to Toulouse as prior of the canonical monastery of St Saturnin and was raised to the episcopal see of this city as successor to Bishop Pontius of Balbastro in A.D. 1104.  Due to his humility, he did not like to have been elevated to the episcopal chair, but once in place, he carried out his office with great conscientiousness, using whatever he had left over from the bishop's income for the benefit of the poor and for pious foundations.   ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN AUGUST Saints celebrated on the 31st of August WELCOME! SAINT RAYMOND NONNATUS, CONFESSOR Raymond was surnamed Nonnatus [not born] because he was brought into the world contrary to the common law of nature, in that he was removed from the side of his dead mother. He rejected childish amusements and the attractions of the world and so applied himself to piety that all admired the mature virtue of the boy. HE HAD A VERY GREAT LOVE FOR THE MOTHER OF GOD He had a very great love for the  Mother of God , to whom he continually and earnestly prayed. He entered the order which bore the title of the Order of Ransom , or Mercy, for the redemption of captives, and he vigilantly guarded the virginity which he had already consecrated to the  Blessed Virgin . He was outstanding in the practice of the other virtues, especially in charity towards the Christians who were spending a wretched life under the yoke of pagans.   ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN JANUARY Saints celebrated on the 7th of January WELCOME! SAINT RAYMOND OF PENNAFORD, PRIEST Saint Raymond of Pennaford [Penyafort] was born at Barcelona of the noble family of Pennaford. He was diligent in prayer and the study of canon and civil law at Bologna, where he received his doctorate and interpreted the sacred canons with distinction. DILIGENCE IN PRAYER Bishop Berengarius  made him a canon and provost of the church of Barcelona, and Raymond’s virtue, learning, and pleasant disposition made him outstanding. DEVOTION TO OUR LADY He strove to his utmost to promote devotion to Our Lady. At about forty-five, he became a Dominican. On his advice, his penitent, St Peter Nolasco, founded with James I of Aragon the order of Our Lady of Mercy, for the Ransom of Captives, for which Raymond wrote a very suitable rule.
