SAINT ROBERT LAWRENCE,  RELIGIOUS AND MARTYR London Oratory, The Martyrs of Tyburn Tree (detail)  Saint Robert Lawrence, the Carthusian martyr, was born probably in Dorsetshire, studied in Cambridge and, according to Thomas Wrothesley, Earl of Southampton, was once chaplain to the Duke of Norfolk. After his profession at the London Charterhouse, he succeeded John Houghton as prior of Beauvale (1531).  At the appearance of the decree of May 15, 1535, announcing Henry VIII as Supreme Head of the English Church, St Robert went to London for the advice of Prior Houghton. He accompanied Houghton and Augustine Webster, Prior of Axholme, in a visit to Thomas Cromwell for a modified form of the decree that they could accept in conscience.  Thereupon they were imprisoned in the Tower together with Richard Reynolds, a Bridgettine of Syon. PRAYER: Grant to your Church, we beseech you, O Lord, through the intercession of Saint Robert, not to think high-mindedly, but to grow in humility pleasing to you; that, despising what is base, she may with unbounded love diligently do whatever is right.   ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN JUNE Saints celebrated on the 7th of June WELCOME! SAINT ROBERT OF NEWMINSTER, ABBOT  (Abbot of Newminster, in England, of the Cistercian Order.) Saint Robert was a native of Yorkshire, and even in his childhood an enemy to the usual amusements of that age, loving only prayer, serious reading, and useful and pious employments. Having finished his studies, he was ordained priest, and instituted to a rectorship of a parish in the diocese of York; but after discharging that office sometime with great assiduity and zeal, he resigned that living, and took the religious habit in the Benedictine monastery of our Lady in York.  THEY FOUNDED THE FAMOUS ABBEY Richard, the prior of this house, and twelve others, desiring to serve God according to the primitive institute of the Benedictine Order, left the monastery, with leave of the abbot, and endeavouring to execute their project, struggled with incredible hardships; till Thurstan the pious archbishop of ...

  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN APRIL Saints celebrated on the 29th of April WELCOME! SAINT ROBERT, ABBOT OF MOLESME  (Founder of the Cistercians. A.D. 1110.) Saint Robert was born in Champagne, about the year 1018. His parents, Theodoric and Ermegarde, were no less noble than virtuous, and brought him up in learning and piety.  PROGRESS IN PERFECTION At the age of fifteen, he became a Benedictine monk in the abbey of Montier-la-celle , where he made such progress in perfection, that, though he was one of the youngest in that house, he was chosen prior, and some time after made abbot of St Michael de Tonnerre. SAINT RUPERT, BISHOP OF SALZBURG  (In Austria, Saint Rupert is celebrated on 24th September, the day of the translation of his relics.) St Rupert, or Robert, was, by birth, a Frenchman, and of royal blood; but still more illustrious for his learning, and the extraordinary virtues he practised from his youth. He exercised himself in austere fasting, watching, and other mortifications; was a great lover of chastity and temperance; and so charitable as always to impoverish himself to enrich the poor.  THE PEOPLE COULD NOT BEAR THE LUSTRE OF SUCH SANCTITY His reputation drew persons from remote provinces to receive his advice and instructions. So distinguished a merit raised him to the episcopal see of Worms.  But that people, being for the most part, idolaters, could not bear the lustre of such sanctity, which condemned their irregularities and superstitions. SAINT ROBERT SOUTHWELL, PRIEST AND MARTYR  ⬅️  Forty Martyrs of England and Wales Saint Robert Southwell was a poet, Jesuit, martyr. He was born at Horsham St Faith's, Norfolk, England, in 1561, and was hanged at Tyburn, February 21, 1595.  FR SOUTHWELL'S FAMILY HISTORY His grandfather, Sir Richard Southwell, had been a wealthy man and a prominent courtier in the reign of Henry VIII. It was Richard Southwell who in 1547 had brought the poet Henry Howard, Earl of Surrey, to the block, and Surrey had vainly begged to be allowed to "fight him in his shirt". SAINT RIGOBERT, BISHOP OF REIMS Saint Rigobert (Robert), abbot of Orbais, afterward bishop of Rheims [Reims], was favoured with the gift of miracles, and suffered an unjust banishment under Charles Martel.  PENANCE AND PRAYER He was recalled by Pepin, but finding Milo in possession of his see, retired to Gernicour, a village four or five leagues from Rheims, where he led a retired life in the exercises of penance and prayer.  He died about the year 750, and was buried in the church of St Peter at Gernicour, which he had built.  THE TRANSLATION OF HIS RELICS Hinomar, the fifth bishop from him, translated his relics to the abbey of St Theodoric, and nine years after, to the church of St Dionysius at Rheims. Fulco, Hincmar’s successor, removed them into the metropolitan church of our Lady, in which the greater part is preserved in a rich shrine; but a portion is kept in the church of St ...
