As a young adult he joined a group of pilgrims who travelled to Palestine. There he remained for seven years, staying for some time with a certain hermit on the banks of the Jordan. When his holy companion decided to leave the cell to serve God at an even more secluded spot, Simeon went to live at a monastery in Bethlehem, where he stayed for two years. There he was ordained a deacon. At length he settled among the monks who dwelt at the foot of Mount Sinai in Arabia, and edified the brethren there by his austere life and virtuous conduct. For some time Simeon left to stay at a cave on the Red Sea, and on another occasion he dwelt in a dilapidated...

ST SIMEON STYLITES - 5 JANUARY

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN JANUARY Saints celebrated on the 5th of January WELCOME! SAINT SIMEON STYLITES, CONFESSOR (A.D. 459) Saint Simeon was, in his life and conduct, a subject of astonishment, not only to the whole Roman empire, but also to many barbarous and infidel nations. The Persians, Medes, Saracens, Ethiopians, Iberians, and Scythians, had the highest veneration for him. The kings of Persia thought his benediction a great happiness. The Roman emperors solicited his prayers, and consulted him on matters of the greatest importance.  A SUBJECT OF ADMIRATION It must nevertheless, be acknowledged, that his most remarkable actions, how instrumental soever they might be to this universal veneration and regard for him, are a subject of admiration, not of imitation. They may serve, notwithstanding, to our spiritual edification and improvement in virtue; as we cannot well reflect on his fervour, without condemning and being confounded at our own indolence in the service of G...

Sapor, incensed by their discourse against the servants of God, laid aside his intended journey to Aspharesa, and published a severe edict commanding the Christians everywhere to be taken into custody.  HE COMMANDED CHRISTIANS TO BE ARRESTED Mahanes, Abraham, and Simeon were the first who fell into the hands of his messengers. The next day the magians laid a new information before the king, saying: "Sapor, bishop of Beth-Nictor, and Isaac, bishop of Beth-Seleucia, build churches, and seduce many."  The king answered in great wrath: "It is my command that...
