  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN APRIL   Saints celebrated on the 28th of April WELCOME! SAINT ZENO AND COMPANIONS, MARTYRS A page of one of Fortunatus Hueber's Saints' books, "Stammenbuch..." (1693) Saint Zeno, martyr of Corcyra (that was the name of the city and island of Corfu in antiquity) had three companions: Eusebius, Neon and Vitalius, of whom the first two are also mentioned on April 24 as martyrs of Nicomedia. According to local tradition, they were converted to the Faith by Saints Jason and Sosipater. Seized by the excited idolaters, they were thrown to the ground on their way to the dungeon, beaten and maltreated, and when they remained steadfast, the Praeses Cercilinus sentenced them to death by fire.  According to the Bollandists *, their martyrdom happened in A.D. 100.   ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN FEBRUARY   Saints celebrated on the 10th of February SAINT ZENO, MONK Saint Zeno, a monk near Antioch in Syria, probably a native of New Caesarea in Pontus, left fatherland and wealth to become a disciple of Saint Basil. The church historian Theodoret praised him, and the Greek Church numbered him among the saints soon after his death. He was an imperial postman and had formerly served in the war. But the great danger of this position, which brought in earthly goods and at the same time jeopardized those of heaven, caused him to leave the world altogether (some time after the year 378) and to withdraw to a tomb on a mountain near Antioch, where he lived in extreme poverty, performing great penances. From there he attended holy Mass and the sermon and nourished himself with holy communion. Saint Zeno is styled a martyr by St Gregory the Great, and in several martyrologies. But was honoured only with the title of confessor, in the ancient missal of Verona, before the time of Lewis Lippoman, bishop of that city, in 1548: and it appears, from the manner in which St Ambrose, who was his contemporary, writing to Syagrius, our saint’s successor, speaks of his happy death, and extols his eminent sanctity, that he did not die by the sword.  Living in the days of Constantius, Julian, and Valens, he might deserve the title of martyr, by sharing in the persecutions carried on by those princes.
