SAINT ANTHONY, ABBOT

Saint Anthony [Antony], Abbot, was born in Egypt about A.D. 260. When his parents died, he gave his inheritance to the poor, and went into the desert, where he lived a life of penance.

LIFE IN THE DESERT

Many came to follow him, and he is known as the father of monks. He supported those who suffered for the faith under the persecution of Diocletian, and helped St Athanasius in his fight against the Arians. He died in 356.

PRAYER:

Father,

you called Saint Anthony

to renounce the world

and serve you in the solitude of the desert.

By his prayers and example,

may we learn to deny ourselves

and to love you above all things.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,

who lives and reigns with you

in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

God, for ever and ever.
