SAINT GERMANUS OF BESANÇON, BISHOP
Mentioned on this day in the Roman Martyrology is Saint Germanus, Bishop of Besançon and martyr [He was the successor of St Desideratus].
HE ADORNED HIS EPISCOPATE WITH ALL VIRTUES
St Germanus adorned his episcopate with all the virtues of a great cleric of the Church. He was finally killed by arrows at the hands of the Arians. Grandfontaine (Fons grandis) near Besançon is named as his place of suffering.
GRATEFUL VENERATION
The acts detailing his life and martyrdom (which took place around A.D. 372 according to some - other sources state that his death occurred around A.D. 407) have since been lost; but his memory was preserved by the grateful veneration which posterity devoted to him. His mortal remains rest at Baume Abbey.
