ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN OCTOBER
Saints celebrated on the 16th of October
SAINT HEDWIG OF SILESIA, WIDOW
Saint Hedwig (Jadwiga) was born in Bavaria about 1174; she was married to Henry, duke of Silesia and Poland, and became mother of seven children. The family lived a very religious life, marked by penance, fasting and charity.
SHE TOOK UNDER HER PROTECTION THE POOR
St Hedwig took under her protection the poor and founded a hospital for them. After the death of her husband she lived in the convent of which her surviving daughter was abbess. She died in 1243. [She is the patron of Silesia, Bavaria, Berlin, and is invoked against jealousy and debt.]
PRAYER:
All-powerful God,
may the prayers of St Hedwig bring us your help
and may her life of remarkable humility
be an example to us all.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son,
who lives and reigns with you
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.
Amen.
