SAINT MONICA, MOTHER OF SAINT AUGUSTINE

Born in 332, in North Africa, of a Christian family, married to a pagan, Patricius, whom she brought to the faith, Monica is best known as the mother of St Augustine of Hippo. She had four children altogether. She prayed and wept for Augustine, and his conversion filled her with joy. He has left an account of her death: detached from the world by a life of prayer and sense of God, she gladly left it. She died in 387.

PRAYER:

God of mercy,

comfort of those in sorrow,

the tears of Saint Monica moved you

to convert her son Saint Augustine to the faith of Christ.

By their prayers, help us to turn from our sins

and to find your loving forgiveness.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,

who lives and reigns with you

in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

God, for ever and ever.

The Proprium of Passau relates his life story as follows: Saint Valentine came from the seashore and arrived at Batava, today's Passau. Here he wanted to proclaim the gospel to the inhabitants, who were ignorant of the true worship of God, and therefore went to Rome to obtain the necessary authority from the Pope for this undertaking. Upon his return, he invested much time and effort to gain those lost souls for Christ, as the Pope expected him to.
