SAINT IRENAEUS, BISHOP AND MARTYR
Born at Smyrna about 130, Saint Irenaeus was a disciple of St Polycarp and became bishop of Smyrna. He was a priest at Lyons in France at the time of the persecution there, and became bishop of the city when the previous bishop was martyred. He is known as a theologian, a powerful defender of the faith against the heresy of the Gnostics. He is thought to have been martyred about 200. (📷 1. St Irenaeus, 2. PRAYER:
Father,
you called Saint Irenaeus to uphold your truth
and bring peace to your Church.
By his prayers renew in us faith and love
that we may always be intent
on fostering unity and peace.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God, for ever and ever.
Amen.
