SAINT CHRODEGANG, BISHOP OF SEEZ

Saint Chrodegang (Godegrandus, Chrodegandus), Bishop of Seez (Sagium) in France, was a descendant of a noble family from the area of Hiesmes (Oximium) in Normandy. According to the Bollandists, St Chrodegang had one sister, the holy Abbess Saint Opportuna of Montreuil, who is venerated on April 22.

St Chrodegang was born the middle of the 8th century.

HE WAS KILLED BY A FALSE FRIEND

As Bishop of Seez he made a pilgrimage to Rome and when he returned seven years later, he was killed in Nonant by a false friend named Chrodobert, to whom he had entrusted the administration of his bishopric.

His sister Opportuna, very sad about his tragic end, had his body buried in the Abbey of Montreuil. His head later came to St Martin's Church in Paris, the remaining relics to Isle-Adam near Pontoise (Pontisara) on the Oise.

[He is noted for his support of the disadvantaged and disabled.]  However, not all the details about his life are entirely reliable; some of the sources give him the title "Bishop and Martyr".

The Proprium of Passau relates his life story as follows: Saint Valentine came from the seashore and arrived at Batava, today's Passau. Here he wanted to proclaim the gospel to the inhabitants, who were ignorant of the true worship of God, and therefore went to Rome to obtain the necessary authority from the Pope for this undertaking. Upon his return, he invested much time and effort to gain those lost souls for Christ, as the Pope expected him to. Valentine himself thirsted for their salvation, incessantly preaching the Divine word to them. After some considerable time, however, Valentine realised that all the seed he had sown fell on rocky ground. Thus he travelled again to Rome with the request to be sent to another place that had fertile soil. The Pope received him graciously, consecra...
