Saints celebrated on the 9th of July
SAINT ANDREAS WOUTERS, PRIEST AND MARTYR
St Andreas (Andries) Wouters, one of the Martyrs of Gorkum, was born in 1542. He worked as a priest in Heineoord, Diocese of Haarlem, Netherlands. Before his and his companions’ martyrdom, his conduct was at times not edifying, including bouts of drinking and womanising. All 19 martyrs of Gorkum (priests and religious) were tortured and hanged by Calvinists in the night of July 9, 1572, for “Papism” and their belief in the Real Presence in the Eucharist. With his courageous martyrdom and perseverance in the Faith, St Andreas made up for his past life. His last words, now famous, were: “Fornicator I always was, heretic I never was.” He was canonised on June 29, 1865. St Andreas, pray for us. Martyrs of Gorkum, pray for us.
PRAYER:
O God,
who adorned with the laurel of immortality
the glorious battle of your blessed martyrs of Gorkum for the Faith,
graciously grant that with them
we may deserve to be crowned in heaven.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ,
who lives and reigns with you
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God, for ever and ever.
Amen.
