Prayer to the Angels and the Saints
Heavenly Father, in praising Your Angels and Saints we praise Your glory, for by honouring them we honour You, their Creator. Their splendour shows us Your greatness, which infinitely surpasses that of all creation.
In Your loving providence, You saw fit to send Your Angels to watch over us. Grant that we may always be under their protection and one day enjoy their company in heaven.
Heavenly Father, You are glorified in Your Saints, for their glory is the crowning of Your gifts. You provide an example for us by their lives on earth, You give us their friendship by our communion with them, You grant us strength and protection through their prayer for the Church, and You spur us on to victory over evil and the prize of eternal glory by this great company of witnesses.
Grant that we who aspire to take part in their joy may be filled with the Spirit that blessed their lives, so that, after sharing their faith on earth, we may also experience their peace in heaven. Amen.
BL. MICHAEL McGIVNEY, PRIEST
Michael Joseph McGivney, of Irish heritage, was born on August 12, 1852 in Connecticut, USA. He was ordained a priest after he had to interrupt and later resume his studies because his father had died.
From his own experience, Fr Michael recognised the devastating effect on immigrant families of the father and wage earner's untimely death.
THE KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS
On March 29, 1882, while an assistant pastor at St Mary's Church in New Haven, Connecticut, Fr Michael founded the Knights of Columbus, with a small group of parishioners, as a mutual aid society, to provide financial assistance, in the event of the men's deaths, to their widows and orphans. The organisation developed as a fraternal society. Fr Michael was also known for his tireless work among his parishioners.
HE WAS KNOWN FOR HIS TIRELESS WORK AMONG HIS PARISHIONERS
Fr Michael spent seven years at St Mary's, then became pastor of St Thomas Church in Thomaston in 1884. He died from pneumonia at the age of 38 in Thomaston on the eve of the Assumption, August 14, 1890.
HIS BEATIFICATION
Fr Michael was beatified on October 31, 2020, Cathedral of Saint Joseph, Hartford, Connecticut, by Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin.
