Saints celebrated on the 16th of July
Prayer to the Angels and the Saints
Heavenly Father, in praising Your Angels and Saints we praise Your glory, for by honouring them we honour You, their Creator. Their splendour shows us Your greatness, which infinitely surpasses that of all creation.
In Your loving providence, You saw fit to send Your Angels to watch over us. Grant that we may always be under their protection and one day enjoy their company in heaven.
Heavenly Father, You are glorified in Your Saints, for their glory is the crowning of Your gifts. You provide an example for us by their lives on earth, You give us their friendship by our communion with them, You grant us strength and protection through their prayer for the Church, and You spur us on to victory over evil and the prize of eternal glory by this great company of witnesses.
Grant that we who aspire to take part in their joy may be filled with the Spirit that blessed their lives, so that, after sharing their faith on earth, we may also experience their peace in heaven. Amen.
BL. IRMENGARD OF CHIEMSEE
Born at King Louis' court in Regensburg (Ratisbon), Bavaria, around A.D. 830, Irmengard (Irmgard), like her sisters, was destined for a monastic life. She was raised at the Benedictine abbey of Buchau in Swabia.
IRMENGARD WAS APPOINTED ABBESS
About 850 Louis appointed Irmengard abbess of Frauenwörth, which had been founded by the last Agilolfing duke Tassilo III of Bavaria in 782 and held the status of an Imperial abbey since 788.
HER HOLY DEATH
During her leadership the decayed premises were restored and the former chapter for noble ladies developed into a Benedictine convent. Blessed Irmengard passed to her eternal reward on July 16, 866.
HER RELICS WERE RE-UNIFIED
Irmengard was already venerated in the early 11th century, when abbot Gerhard had her headreliquary translated to Seeon Abbey in 1004. She was beatified only on July 17, 1929 by Pope Pius XI. Her relics were re-unified during a festive ceremony in 2003.
HER FEAST DAY
Irmengard's feast is July 16. In Frauenchiemsee, Irmengardstag is celebrated the Sunday nearest to 16 July. In paintings Irmengard is portrayed in a Benedictine habit either crowned with Bible and abbot's staff or with heart in her hand.
