JEROME, RELIGIOUS
Jerome (Hieronymus), commemorated on 26 December, was a Spanish Franciscan of Villa-Carrillo, whose work as a missionary in Peru was accompanied by extraordinary blessings.
HIS HUMILITY
In view of his great merits, it was attempted to make him bishop of Tucuman (one of the La Plata states), a dignity which he persistently refused out of humility.
His power of persuasion was so extraordinary that he often - by a look he cast into their souls - brought people who had strayed to repentance.
HIS PRAYERS
He prayed the holy office standing upright all the way through, even at an old age, and he recited it slowly and with the greatest devotion. He used to read Mass for an hour with abundant tears.
He died around the year 1590 in Lima, Peru. Vast crowds payed their last respects, and he left the reputation of being an example of a genuine religious.
