SAINT ADELARIUS, KING OF NORTHUMBERLAND
Saint Adelarius (Ceolvulphus), French: St-Celvulf. He was the first King of Northumberland and then monk at Lindisfarne. Already while still sitting on the throne he was totally devoted to God and found his greatest joy in reading and researching the Holy Scriptures.
Venerable Bede dedicated his Church History to him.
HE ENTERED THE LINDISFARNE MONASTERY
After struggling with many incidents and accidents during his eight years reign, he resigned the government in 731 and entered the Lindisfarne monastery, where he died. His death occurred - according to Mabillon - in 760. In connection with St Adelarius, the Bollandists only mention the 8th century in general. Bucelin mentions him twice, on August 10 and December 11.
