ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN JANUARY
Saints celebrated on the 19th of January
DAGOBERT I., KING
Dagobertus I (January 19, 639), king of France, is counted among the "saints" by some hagiographers, among the "blessed" by others, and among the "pious" by Saussay.
HE IS BURIED IN PARIS
After Clovis, this son of Clotaire II was the most capable regent of the Merovingian family. He was buried in the monastery of St Denis in Paris.
A NAIL IN HIS HAND?
According to the "attributes of the saints," he is depicted in iconography with a crown, sceptre, and a nail in his hand. Menzel, too, states that Dagobert carries a nail in his hand, with which he was martyred. According to this he would have been a martyr, which does not seem likely to us, since we could not find anything about his martyrdom either in Butler, where he is often mentioned, or in the Bollandists. Rather, it is probable that this attribute belongs to St Dagobert II, who may have been tortured to death by Grimoald with a nail.
