JOHN II., POPE
Some martyrologists list Pope John II on January 12; others mention him on May 27. The Bollandists find no ecclesiastical veneration of him.
"MERCURIUS"
He was a Roman and early cardinal priest at St Clement's. He is nicknamed Mercurius - why, or for what reason is not known.
His pontificate lasted from December 31, 532 to May 27, 535 (or May 7, 536).
THE 57th POPE
Dr Karl Haas, from whose "History of the Popes" the above information is drawn, says that he was a kind and just prince of the church. The fate of his government, which was comparatively uneventful, can be looked up in appropriate sources. Haas names him as the 57th Pope.
