ST ONESIPHORUS, MARTYR - 6 SEPTEMBER

SAINT ONESIPHORUS, MARTYR

Sosthenes, Apollos, Cephas, Tychicus,
Epaphroditus, Caesar, and Onesiphorus

On September 6 we commemorate Saints Onesiphorus and Porphyrius, Martyrs, who lived in the first century.

What Holy Scripture tells us of Onesiphorus is to be read in Saint Paul's Second Epistle to Timothy (1:16-18)¹. Saint Porphyrius was a member of his household.

THEY WERE SEIZED AS PART OF THE PERSECUTION OF CHRISTIANS

They laboured in the work of spreading the Gospel until towards the end of the first century.

Then, tradition alleges that, because of their Christian faith, they were seized by agents of the persecuting Emperor Domitian somewhere on the Hellespont, tied to wild horses and so torn to pieces.

¹"May the Lord grant mercy to the household of Onesiphorus, for he often refreshed means was not ashamed of my chains, but when he arrived in Rome he searched for me earnestly and found me" (2 Timothy 1:16-18).

"Greet Prisca and Aquila, and the household of Onesiphorus" (2 Timothy 4:19).

May the intercession of Saint Onesiphorus commend us to you, so that through his merits we may obtain that which we cannot accomplish by our own. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.

SERVANT OF GOD JACQUES HAMEL, PRIEST AND MARTYR "Jacques Hamel (30 November 1930 - 26 July 2016) was a French Catholic priest who served in Saint-Étienne-du-Rouvray. On July 26, 2016, Hamel was murdered during the 2016 Normandy church attack by two Muslim men pledging allegiance to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant while he celebrated Mass in his church." (From Wikipedia) Father Hamel, 85, still officiated regularly as auxiliary at the church in St Étienne-du-Rouvray, near Rouen, Normandy, France, and in neighbouring Elbeuf, local media reported, stepping in when the parish’s regular priest, Father Auguste Moanda-Phuati, was busy.
