WELCOME!

GUDMUNDUR ARASON, BISHOP OF HÓLAR

Gudmundur the Good was born in 1161, in Hörgárdalur, Iceland. Ordained a priest in 1185 at the age of 24, he acquired a reputation as pious and devout man, and as a miracle-worker.

HE AROUSED THE IRE OF THE SECULAR NOTABLES

In 1203 he was elected bishop of Hólar (the northern one of the two Icelandic bishop seats). Both his contemporaries and later generations compared him with Saint Thomas Becket. Gudmundur was generous with the Church's holdings, and soon a great number of impoverished dependents settled around Hólar. His generosity aroused the ire of local chieftains.

HIS VITA

His holy death occurred on March 16, 1237.

His story is recorded in several manuscripts, most notably Prestssaga Guðmundar góða. He is often referred to as Guðmundur góði,  Guðmundr or Gudmund the Good).

The civil administrator threatened to boil them in oil if they did not tell the Lady’s secret. Though badly frightened, they could not think of disobeying our Lady. In disgust, the administrator finally freed them. A large number of people, not knowing that the children had been kidnapped, went to the Cova for the scheduled appearance of the Lady. At noon, there was a loud clap of thunder.
