BLESSED BENEVENUTO MARENI, RELIGIOUS

Blessed Benevenuto Mareni was born in Recanati, Italy. Living in the 13th-century, he became a Franciscan Conventual lay brother in Recanati.

HIS ECSTASIES

He worked at his monastery as a cook, and spent his free time in prayer. During prayer and Mass he would lapse into ecstacies and receive visions; during one vision he was allowed to hold the Infant Christ.

AN ANGEL WAS PREPARING THE MEAL

Legend says that once when a trance lasted so long that he was late to his work in the kitchen, he found an angel there already cooking.

He died on May 5, 1269 in Recanati, and is interred at the church of San Franceso in Recanati.

O God, who gladden us with the annual feast of blessed Benevenuto, mercifully grant that, while honouring the anniversary of his death, we may also imitate his deeds. The Proprium of Passau relates his life story as follows: Saint Valentine came from the seashore and arrived at Batava, today's Passau. Here he wanted to proclaim the gospel to the inhabitants, who were ignorant of the true worship of God, and therefore went to Rome to obtain the necessary authority from the Pope for this undertaking. Upon his return, he invested much time and effort to gain those lost souls for Christ, as the Pope expected him to. Valentine himself thirsted for their salvation, incessantly preaching the Divine word to them.
