ADALVARDUS AND STEPHANUS, BISHOPS AND MARTYRS
Several authors of hagiography mention Adalvardus and Stephanus [Adalvard and Stephen]. They are listed as saintly bishops of Birka in Sweden.
Adalvardus is said to have been the second bishop of that place, who was sent there by Saint Anscharius [Saint Ansgar], whereupon he suffered martyrdom at Upsala; Stephen is said to have accompanied Adalvard and then been martyred at Helsingborg.
However, neither of the two seems to have enjoyed public veneration in Sweden at any point.
