GOMES EANES, ABBOT
[The Portuguese-born abbot Gomes Eanes, a son of a notary, who left Lisbon for Italy in 1409.] is remembered on May 29. He became abbot at Florence [from 1419 - 1439] and General of the Camaldolese Order under Pope Eugene IV.
He is praised as a wise man, a peacemaker and a benefactor of the poor. He was called as far away as Portugal in his function of reformer of the monasteries. [While the head of Santa Maria of Florence, Abbot Gomes Eanes returned to Portugal twice for this purpose.] He died in 1442 with a reputation for holiness.
