Saints celebrated on the 29th of May
MARCUS SCHENKLI, ABBOT OF FISCHINGEN
Marcus was a Benedictine abbot of Fischingen [an Abbey in Switzerland] (which was previously called Augia S. Mariae, later Piscina, and had been founded by the Counts of Toggenburg).
A DIFFICULT AND DANGEROUS TIME
Born in Wyl, surnamed Schenkli, Marcus became abbot in 1540. He is the thirty-fifth abbot in the order of abbots. His work came at a difficult and dangerous time, but no obstacle was too great for his strength and zeal.
REPAIRING THE DAMAGE CAUSED BY THE REFORMATION
He restored the broken altars and gathered able youths to take the place of the apostates. Of course he had to put up with a lot. But everything he did and suffered for God's sake with joy. On May 29, 1553, he received the reward prepared for the servants of God. He is buried in the presbytery below the cathedra.
