Saints celebrated on the 25th of May
MENTIA OF MENDOSA, VIRGIN
Mentia of Mendosa, a nun of noble birth, was of the order of St Clare at Jaén in Spain. Of high birth, she sought the still nobler birth of God and the vocation to serve Him.
Ever since she was a child, whenever she pronounced the name of the Divine Redeemer or heard it mentioned, she was moved by the deepest awe; she always saw and recognised in it an invitation to humble herself before him and to praise him.
Since she was not lacking in temporal goods, she was happy whenever she was able to do a work of love for the Bridegroom of her soul. Already when still living in the world as a member of the Third Order, this was her frame of mind. Once she had taken the veil, she grew still more in holiness. From then onwards, she subjected her body to the most severe mortifications and prayed almost incessantly until she died on May 25, 1558, in the odour of sanctity.
