Prayer to the Angels and the Saints

Heavenly Father, in praising Your Angels and Saints we praise Your glory, for by honouring them we honour You, their Creator. Their splendour shows us Your greatness, which infinitely surpasses that of all creation.

In Your loving providence, You saw fit to send Your Angels to watch over us. Grant that we may always be under their protection and one day enjoy their company in heaven.

Heavenly Father, You are glorified in Your Saints, for their glory is the crowning of Your gifts. You provide an example for us by their lives on earth, You give us their friendship by our communion with them, You grant us strength and protection through their prayer for the Church, and You spur us on to victory over evil and the prize of eternal glory by this great company of witnesses.

Grant that we who aspire to take part in their joy may be filled with the Spirit that blessed their lives, so that, after sharing their faith on earth, we may also experience their peace in heaven. Amen.

ST AYBERT, RECLUSE

Aibertus (Aybertus), Monk and Hermit, was born in 1060 at Espain in the diocese of Tournai. The son of a soldier, St Aibert developed a burning zeal for prayer at an early age and spent a large part of the night kneeling in prayer.

A song [by a minstrel] about the austerity of penance and the virtues of the hermit Theobald (who had recently passed away) made him decide to renounce the world, and to travel. For this reason he joined the hermit Johannes of the Crespin monastery in Hainaut. He gladly received him and found in him a perfect champion of Christ.

Neither of them ever had a fire, never ate anything cooked, only very rarely got bread themselves, and lived mostly on wild herbs. When, some time later, St Aibert had taken the religious habit in the monastery of Crespin, he was subsequently appointed provost and cellar master of the same and had to take care of many distracting duties simultaneously; but they could not disturb his inner composure.

After having lived twenty years in the monastery, however, with the permission of his abbot Lambert, he returned to the wilderness in 1118, where he returned to his former austerity regarding food.

Believers flocked from all sides to seek his advice and prayer in matters of conscience, so Bishop Burkard of Cambrai ordained him a priest and had a chapel built for him by his cell. From then on, he read two holy Masses each day; one for the living and the other for the dead, and heard confessions of sinners who came to see him.

St Aybert died in A.D. 1140 at the age of 80 and was buried in his cell. God glorified his tomb with many miracles and his name became widely known. Some writers list St Aybert on May 2.

He was master of arts in one of our universities; but going abroad to Douay, in Flanders, was received into the English college there, 1576, and made priest in 1577; and the year following sent upon the mission. Where he had not been long before he again went abroad, and travelled to Rome, partly for devotion, and partly for further improvement in learning. BLESSED RICHARD NEWPORT, PRIEST AND MARTYR Richard Newport, alias Smith , was born in Northamptonshire and performed his studies abroad, partly in the college of Rheims (if he be the Richard Smith whom I find in the Douay diary sent to Rome in 1586) and partly in that of Rome, where he was made priest. From thence he was sent upon the English mission, and behaved himself in such a manner as justly to acquire the character of a laborious missionary; being withal remarkably successful in bringing home many strayed sheep to the fold of Christ, to which his apostolical way of living did not a little contribute. He was several times apprehended and cast into prison, and twice banished.
