PIUS XII, POPE
Pius XII, original name Eugenio Maria Giuseppe Giovanni Pacelli, was born March 2, 1876, Rome. He died October 9, 1958 at Castel Gandolfo.
As pope, bishop of Rome and head of the Roman Catholic Church, he had a long, tumultuous pontificate (1939-58). During his reign as pope, the papacy confronted the ravages of World War II (1939-45), the abuses of the Nazi, fascist, and Soviet regimes, the horror of the Holocaust, the challenge of postwar reconstruction, and the threat of communism and the Cold War.

Eugenio Maria Giuseppe Giovanni Pacelli was born in Rome, Italy, in 1876 and ordained in 1899. Because of his training in canon law, he became a diplomat for the Church.
He was created a cardinal by Pope Pius XI, and in 1939 he was elected pope. When the Nazis occupied Rome, the Holy Father opened the Vatican to more than a million Jewish refugees.
He declared the doctrine of the Assumption. Pope Pius XII died on October 8, 1958.
