SAINTS ELEUTHERIUS AND ANTHIA, MARTYRS
Today, we also commemorate Saints Eleutherius and Anthia. The Roman Martyrology states:
"At Messina, the birthday of the holy martyrs, Eleutherius, bishop of Illyricum, and Anthia, his mother. Illustrious by his holiness of life and his power of working miracles, he was, in the reign of Adrian, laid on a bed of red-hot iron, on a gridiron, in a pan filled with boiling oil, pitch and resin; he was cast to the lions, but, remaining unhurt, he finally had his throat pierced with a sword. His mother suffered a similar punishment."
With them suffered Paternius, Calocerus, Febus, Procelus, Apollonius, Fortunatus, Crispinus, Expeditus, Mappalicus, Victorinus and Gagus, who were thrown to the beasts in the arena. (II. 528.) (Stadler, vol. 2, 1861, p. 27)
PRAYER:
Grant to your Church, we beseech you, O Lord, through the intercession of your holy martyrs Eleutherius and Anthia, not to think high-mindedly, but to grow in humility pleasing to you; that, despising what is base, she may with unbounded love diligently do whatever is right. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.
