BLESSED JAMES OF VITERBO, ARCHBISHOP OF NAPLES
James [Jacobus] of Viterbo was born Giacomo Capocci in 1255. An Italian Augustinian hermit friar and Scholastic theologian, he was sent to study in Paris. He wrote commentaries on various New Testament pieces. In 1302, he composed and dedicated to the pope the earliest known treatise on the Church, De regimine Christiano. On September 3, 1302, Boniface VIII created him bishop of Benevento; and on December 12, 1303, he appointed him archbishop of Naples. James went to his eternal reward in 1307. The Augustinians celebrate his feast day on June 4.
PRAYER:
Grant, we beseech you, almighty God, that the venerable feast of Blessed James may increase our devotion and promote our salvation. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.
