ADALBERT, ARCHBISHOP OF BREMEN-HAMBURG
Adalbert [Albert] was born of noble stock c. 1000 in Thuringia, received his education at Halberstadt, where he became canon, by 1032, provost and, in 1045, archbishop of Hamburg-Bremen. Under him the See's efforts to proclaim the Gospel to the northern Slavs and Scandinavians were intensified. Denmark was deeply influenced by Bremen, Sweden only temporarily, and Norway hardly at all; missionaries sailed to Iceland, Greenland, the Orkneys, and Finland; in 1060 Slavic sees were erected at Mecklenburg and Ratzeburg. Adalbert died on March 16, 1072 in Goslar. Adam of Bremen's history is the best source for Adalbert's life.
