THE DIOCESE OF COUSERANS
![]() |
| The ancient Cathedral of Our Lady, (ancient Cathedral Saint Lizier) |
Established as early as the 5th century, the diocese governed the surrounding mountain valleys for over 1,300 years. Located in the Pyrenees mountains of southwestern France and centered around the towns of Saint-Girons and Saint-Lizier, the former province of Couserans is located in the modern Ariège department (Occitanie region).
The magnificent Cathedral Saint Lizier (Cathédrale Saint-Lizier) in Saint-Lizier served as the seat of the bishop and is part of a UNESCO World Heritage site and is a stop along the Way of Saint James (Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage route), which is frequented by large numbers of Christian pilgrims year after year.
Having been dissolved during the French Revolution by forces hostile to the Catholic Church, these days the ancient diocese is part of Catholic Diocese of Pamiers.
